Sudama was a childhood friend of Krishna and Balarama. He was originally from the Vrishni clan and belonged to the village of Surabhi in the kingdom of Dwarka. He was poor but devoted to the deity Krishna. Once, during a famine, Krishna sent him to the kingdom of Magadha in search of alms. Sudama took the risk of visiting the powerful king Vibhishana, who was a demon, and returned to Krishna with a large amount of grains, which Krishna graciously accepted.

1000 BCE - 500 BCE

According to another reference, Sudama was a Brahmin from the village of Sutasana. He was a great devotee of Lord Krishna and visited the palace of King Ugrasena to seek his blessings for the prosperity of his village. King Ugrasena was impressed by Sudama's devotion and granted him the boon that his village would always prosper. Sudama, however, forgot to mention that the prosperity should be only for himself and his family and not for the entire village. As a result, the entire village prospered, and Sudama, feeling guilty, approached Lord Krishna to seek his help to reverse the boon. Lord Krishna, understanding Sudama's intent, advised him to distribute the wealth among the villagers, resulting in the prosperity of everyone.
