About This Name Statistics Directory

What Names Are Covered?

This directory covers every name that appears in the SSA National Baby Names dataset — over 10,000 distinct given names registered to US newborns from 1880 through 2025. The SSA excludes names given to fewer than 5 people per year for privacy reasons, so very rare names may not appear. Surname data comes from a separate US Census Bureau genealogy dataset and is also searchable here.

What Statistics Does Each Name Page Show?

Every name page in this directory provides an estimated count of living Americans who currently carry that name, derived from birth records and age-adjusted survival modeling. Alongside the count you get a rarity classification (Very Common through Very Rare), a 1-in-X probability ratio, gender split, age group distribution across six generations, year-by-year popularity from 1880 to present, decade-by-decade breakdown, and state-level estimates for all 50 states.

How Is the Directory Organised?

Names are accessible in three ways. The A–Z letter navigation at the top of this page links to letter index pages listing all names beginning with that letter, sorted by popularity. The search box lets you jump directly to any individual name page. The category links above filter by gender or by type. Individual name pages also link to similar names so you can browse related entries.

How Accurate Are the Figures?

All counts are statistical estimates, not exact government headcounts. No publicly available US database tracks every living American by name in real time. For common names the estimates are quite reliable. For rare names the margin of error is wider. The complete methodology is explained on the methodology page.
