She is traditionally believed to have lived in the late 3rd or early 4th century in Syracuse, Sicily, and was a young, beautiful, unmarried Christian. According to legend, she was persecuted during the reign of Diocletian for her faith and was tortured by having her eyes gouged out. She was then released, and a miracle restored her sight. She was subsequently sentenced to death and was killed by a sword. Her feast day is celebrated on December 13.
Lucia of Siena, also known as Saint Lucia of Siena or Santa Lucia, was a lay Dominican tertiary and a Catholic Saint. Born in 1288 in Siena, Italy, she was the eldest of thirteen children. She was a poor girl who had a vision of the crucifixion of Jesus, which made her a devout Christian. She was engaged to be married but, before the wedding, she renounced the world and entered the convent of the Order of Saint Dominic. She then served the sick and the poor, and would dress as a Dominican friar in order to minister to them without revealing her gender.
