Gauri is an epithet of Parvati, the consort of Shiva. According to Hindu mythology, Shiva was once in deep meditation with the goddess Kali standing beside him. Kali, in a fit of anger, tried to destroy the universe, but was calmed by Shiva who opened his third eye to destroy the demon Tripurasura. In his fury, the destruction was too extensive and Parvati intervened to restore balance to the universe. She took on the form of Gauri, the beautiful and calming goddess, and Shiva was so enthralled with her that he agreed to marry her. This event is believed to have occurred prior to the 6th century BC.

4th century BC

Another reference for Gauri is found in the Mahabharata, where she is mentioned as the mother of two of the five Pandava brothers, Bhima and Yudhishthira. Gauri, disguised as the goddess, tests Bhima's devotion and strength by asking him to bring the water of the Ganges to her.
