How Our Name Statistics Tool Works
Powered by 140+ years of Social Security Administration birth records
Data Collection
We pull from the SSA National Baby Names dataset, which covers every registered name given to 5 or more babies in the US going back to 1880.
Statistical Modeling
Age-adjusted survival modeling estimates how many people with a given name are likely still living today, accounting for generational attrition.
Rarity Scoring
Each name is scored against the full US population of 330 million and classified as Very Common, Common, Uncommon, Rare, or Very Rare.
Meaning & Origin
Every name result includes its linguistic root, original meaning, cultural background, and notable historical associations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are these name counts exact?
No. The figures are statistical estimates based on SSA birth records and age-survival modeling. No publicly available database tracks every living American by name in real time. For common names the estimates are quite reliable; for rare names the margin of error is wider.
Why does a name show zero results?
The SSA excludes names given to fewer than 5 people per year from its public records. If a name returns no data it is either genuinely very rare, a non-English name with limited US registration, or an alternate spelling of a more common name.
Can I search last names too?
Yes. The tool accepts both first names and surnames. Last name data draws on US Census Bureau genealogy data rather than SSA birth records, so the underlying source is different but the results work the same way.
Does the tool show name meaning and origin?
Yes. Every name result includes a meaning and origin section covering the linguistic root, original definition, cultural background, and historical associations. You can also browse the name meaning directory directly.
